Oppong Nkrumah Urges Government To Back Food Abundance Claims With Practical Action

Member of Parliament for Ofoase-Ayirebi Kojo Oppong Nkrumah has called on the Ghanaian government to move beyond verbal assurances about food abundance and take clear, measurable steps to address challenges facing farmers and food markets. His comments come amid growing debate over the effectiveness of state support for agriculture and food security in the country.
Oppong Nkrumah criticised what he described as “lip service” from government officials who have claimed that Ghana has sufficient food stocks and that state agencies are ready to buy produce directly from farmers. He pointed to recent statements from the Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Buffer Stock Company asserting that the country has food abundance and that interventions are underway.
Despite these assurances, the lawmaker said many farmers in his constituency and elsewhere are struggling to sell their produce and are facing financial strain because buyers are not available. He called for the government to explain how a reported GH¢300 million allocation intended to support the agricultural sector is being used and to show tangible results from those funds.
According to Oppong Nkrumah, failing to address the disconnect between official claims and the reality on the ground could hurt Ghana’s food system and farmers’ livelihoods. He urged authorities to implement practical measures that would stabilise markets, ensure farmers have buyers for their crops and protect local food producers from post-harvest losses.
His remarks underscore ongoing concerns about food security, rising food prices and the need for effective support systems for the agricultural sector, particularly at a time when food affordability remains a key issue for many Ghanaians
