Wontumi Officially Declares Bid For NPP National Chairmanship Race

Ashanti Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, has officially announced his intention to contest for the party’s National Chairmanship ahead of the 2028 general elections. In a statement dated February 4, 2026, Wontumi outlined his reasons for entering the leadership race, saying the party needs unity, strong grassroots engagement and principled leadership to reclaim public confidence and rebuild after recent challenges.

Addressing supporters and party members, Wontumi said his decision followed consultations with senior party elders, youth representatives and his faith, emphasising that his bid is driven by a desire to strengthen the NPP rather than personal ambition. He described the current period as a critical moment in the party’s history, demanding leadership that is steady, courageous and committed to unity across all party levels.

Wontumi argued that the NPP has learned important lessons from its recent setbacks and now needs a leader who understands the party’s grassroots structures and can work effectively with all segments — from veteran members to young activists. He said this approach is essential to restore confidence, empower local branches and prepare the party to contest effectively in future elections.

In his statement, the veteran politician stressed that leadership requires vision and the courage to take difficult decisions in the interest of the party. He said a united NPP, grounded in shared purpose and strengthened by inclusive leadership, would be better positioned to secure a decisive victory in 2028. Wontumi ended his declaration by calling on all party members to rally together and work towards rebuilding the party’s strength and unity ahead of upcoming political contests.
