Scholarship Secretariat Boss Denies Claim He Offered Scholarships To NPP Members

The **Registrar of the Ghana Scholarship Secretariat, Alex Kwaku Asafo-Agyei, has dismissed recent allegations suggesting that scholarships were being offered specifically to members of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as false and misleading. His clarification follows a public claim made by former NEIP CEO Kwame Baffoe Abronye (Nkansah GH) that some scholarships were being “bought” by political affiliates, a claim that triggered debate and demands for investigation.
In a statement shared on social media on February 3, 2026, Asafo-Agyei rejected the suggestion that scholarships were being used as political rewards. He emphasised that the Secretariat operates under strict rules that prioritise merit and need, and that there is no evidence to support claims that awards are restricted to or favoured for members of any political party.
The Registrar said that the allegation that scholarships were being offered to NPP members “cannot be true,” stressing that such claims undermine the integrity of the scholarship awarding process and the Secretariat’s commitment to fairness. He also reiterated that the system seeks to support eligible students across Ghana, regardless of political affiliation or background.
Asafo-Agyei’s comments come amid public scrutiny of scholarship programmes, including ongoing discussions about past management of the Secretariat and concerns over transparency. Critics have previously pointed to historical issues with how awards were processed, and these discussions have helped fuel debates about reform and improved oversight.
The Scholarship Secretariat continues to implement its mandate under the Ministry of Education, working with stakeholders to ensure that awards are made in line with established guidelines and that funds are used to benefit deserving students.
