Professor Eric Dominic Forson Becomes Youngest Associate Professor In Geophysics At University Of Ghana

Professor Eric Dominic Forson, a senior lecturer at the University of Ghana, has made history by becoming one of the youngest academics to be promoted to the rank of Associate Professor, specialising in geophysics and geodata analytics. He achieved the milestone at just 34 years old, drawing praise for his academic excellence and professional contributions.

The promotion places Prof. Forson among a select group of scholars elevated under the university’s new governance provisions, which allow a broader delegation of authority to appoint qualified individuals to senior academic ranks. His elevation was confirmed by the university’s Appointments Board following a review of eligible candidates.

Prof. Forson’s expertise combines geophysics with advanced geospatial data analytics — a field that has growing importance in Ghana and beyond. His work involves using scientific techniques to interpret subsurface data, which has applications in areas such as mineral exploration, groundwater prospecting, and environmental monitoring.

Colleagues and academic observers note that his dual specialisation distinguishes him as the only known Ghanaian at his level with a combined focus on both geophysics and geodata analytics, reflecting the university’s commitment to promoting excellence in technical and data-driven disciplines.

In addition to broader academic recognition, Prof. Forson’s elevation highlights the increasing role that science and technology research play in national development debates, especially in addressing challenges linked to environmental protection and resource management.
