Otumfuo’s Nkosuohene Says Akosua Serwaa Is Daddy Lumba’s Only Wife Amid Dispute

Otumfuo’s Nkosuohene has publicly stated that Akosua Serwaa Fosuh, the widow of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba, is his only wife, a comment that comes amid ongoing disagreements over the late musician’s marital status and widowhood rites following his death.

The declaration followed a warm reception for Akosua Serwaa at Kotoka International Airport, where supporters and well‑wishers greeted her arrival. The chief’s remark came as tensions remain high between different parties claiming rights to Daddy Lumba’s funeral rites and estate.

The issue stems from a legal struggle over whether Akosua Serwaa is the sole lawful wife of Daddy Lumba or whether others also hold that status. A Kumasi High Court previously ruled that she failed to prove a civil marriage that would make her the only surviving spouse, instead recognising both her and another woman, Priscilla Ofori (popularly known as Odo Broni), as customarily married to the late musician.

Following the legal ruling, Akosua Serwaa filed an appeal at the Court of Appeal in Kumasi, challenging the High Court’s rejection of her marriage certificate and arguing that she should be declared the sole lawful spouse.

The broader context includes family disagreements and traditional considerations over funeral rites, inheritance, and recognition under customary law, which have made the matter a subject of substantial public interest. The differing viewpoints reflect both legal and cultural layers in determining marital status in Ghana.
