NPP Must Rebuild Trust And Unite To Win 2028, Says Dr Opoku-Prempeh

Former Minister of Energy and senior New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Dr Matthew Opoku-Prempeh has calle members of his party to strengthen unity and restore public trust as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections. In a statement issued on Wednesday, Dr Opoku-Prempeh urged party supporters and leaders to work together to rebuild confidence and set aside factional differences that emerged during the recent presidential primary.

Dr Opoku-Prempeh emphasised that the NPP’s success in 2028 depends on its ability to present a united front and convince Ghanaians that the party remains committed to good governance and national development. He said that though internal contests are part of democratic processes, the divisions witnessed during the flagbearer race must be healed quickly to strengthen party cohesion.

The former minister noted that many supporters and delegates worked hard to elect Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as the NPP’s flagbearer, and now the focus should shift toward the broader task of building trust with voters across all regions of Ghana. Dr Opoku-Prempeh stressed that unity would not come automatically but must be pursued through intentional dialogue, inclusivity and shared commitment to the party’s values.

He also acknowledged concerns expressed by some party members about the direction of the NPP following the primaries, saying leaders should demonstrate humility and empathy as they engage with those who feel marginalised or disappointed. According to Dr Opoku-Prempeh, the ability to listen and engage positively with grassroots supporters will be critical to the party’s performance in the next elections.

Political commentators have suggested that maintaining unity within the NPP is key not only to securing victory in 2028 but also to strengthening democratic stability in Ghana. They argue that a cohesive ruling party can better articulate policies and connect with citizens on issues affecting everyday life.

Dr Opoku-Prempeh’s remarks come at a time when the NPP is strategising its campaign platform and preparing to counter opposition narratives ahead of the 2028 polls. His call for unity echoes similar appeals by other party elders who say that rebuilding trust and working together should be central to the party’s efforts going forward.
