National Security Moves To Eliminate Dangerous “Heart Cleanser” Drink In Kumasi

National Security operatives in the Ashanti Region have launched a major operation to remove a dangerous drink popularly sold as a “heart cleanser” from the streets of Kumasi following alarming health findings.
The drink, commonly known as “Sukudai” or “Madara Sukudai,” has become popular in some communities, particularly among young people who believe it helps cleanse the heart or chest. The mixture is often sold in Zongo communities and around auto mechanic shops.
Authorities say the product has been circulating quietly for years, usually sold by a small network of vendors, including some foreign traders and local distributors.
Arrest Made During Security Operation
As part of the crackdown, National Security operatives arrested a trader suspected of supplying chemicals used in the preparation of the drink during an operation in Aboabo in Kumasi. The raid followed weeks of intelligence gathering and surveillance by security officials who had become concerned about the widespread sale of the product.
Officials described the presence of the drink on the streets as a serious public safety threat that required urgent intervention.
Laboratory Tests Reveal Dangerous Chemicals
The crackdown was triggered after scientists from the Department of Pharmacology at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) conducted tests on the drink.
Preliminary laboratory analysis revealed that the concoction contains hazardous substances including acetone, zinc chloride, and ethanol. These chemicals are not safe for human consumption and are typically used in industrial or chemical processes.
Acetone is commonly found in nail polish removers and paint thinners, while zinc chloride is a highly corrosive chemical used in wood preservation and batteries.
Tests Show Fatal Effects In Animals
In toxicity experiments carried out by researchers, laboratory rats were given varying doses of the substance. According to the scientists, all the rats died within 24 hours, raising serious concerns about the potential danger to humans who consume the drink.
Researchers also observed that the liquid melted plastic containers during testing, highlighting its corrosive nature.
Health Experts Issue Strong Warning
Medical experts have warned that consuming such a mixture could cause severe damage to internal organs, particularly the liver, kidneys, and digestive system.
Health professionals are urging the public to avoid the drink completely while further investigations continue.
Meanwhile, security agencies say they are working with health authorities and other state institutions to completely eliminate the sale and distribution of the toxic cocktail across the region.
