Nana Poku Ashis Clarifies Yaw Sarpong Marital Status

Nana Poku Ashis, the long time manager of the late Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong, has provided clarity on persistent rumours about his relationship with fellow gospel star Maame Tiwaa. Speaking in a recent media interview, Ashis dismissed claims that Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa were romantically linked or married to each other. According to him, the two were very close friends and professional partners over many years, but never dated or became husband and wife.

Ashis explained that speculation about their connection grew out of their deep friendship and collaboration in music ministry, which led many people to assume there was more to their bond. He said that Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa worked together for over three decades and understood each other very well, largely because of their shared experiences and commitment to gospel music. Their strong connection, he added, was rooted in mutual respect and loyalty rather than a romantic relationship.

The manager also noted that because they spent so much time together performing and travelling for gospel events, some fans mistakenly believed they were a couple. At one point, Yaw Sarpong and Maame Tiwaa even lived in the same house to make it easier for them to attend rehearsals and shows, but this arrangement was based purely on their professional commitments.

Yaw Sarpong, a pioneer of Ghanaian gospel music and leader of the Asomafo Band, passed away on January 20, 2026 after receiving medical care in Kumasi. Maame Tiwaa, who was also a respected gospel musician and part of the Asomafo group, died a month earlier. The clarification by Nana Poku Ashis aimed to put an end to misinformation about their personal lives by insisting that they were never married to each other and their relationship was always one of deep friendship and shared purpose.
