MUSIGA Seeks Government Support For Yaw Sarpong’s Funeral

The Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA) has officially approached Ghana’s government to support and assist with the funeral arrangements of the late gospel music legend Yaw Sarpong. The appeal was made by MUSIGA President Bessa Simons during a visit to the family of the late singer, where union leaders offered condolences and pledged their backing as the nation pauses to mourn his passing.

Simons said the union has formally requested a state-assisted funeral in recognition of Sarpong’s long service and impact on the Ghanaian music industry. The musician’s work over decades made him one of the most respected figures in the gospel music community, and MUSIGA hopes the government will help give him a befitting send-off.

MUSIGA representatives have also been engaging key government officials to highlight Sarpong’s contributions and to accelerate discussions on support for his final rites. The initiative is part of broader efforts by the music fraternity to ensure Sarpong’s legacy is honoured at a national level.

In addition to the formal request to government, MUSIGA has donated GH¢500 to help the family with funeral costs as part of its immediate support. The union described this contribution as a gesture to help ease funeral planning while wider engagements with authorities continue.

Yaw Sarpong, born in 1951, was a celebrated Ghanaian gospel musician and leader of the Asomafo Band. He passed away on January 20, 2026 and is remembered for his deep influence on Ghana’s gospel music scene and spiritual life.
