Minority Calls For Immediate Release Of Kofi Ofosu Nkansah

The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament has urged the Government to immediately release Kofi Ofosu Nkansah, the former Chief Executive Officer of the National Entrepreneurship and Innovation Programme (NEIP), following his detention by the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB). The lawmakers described his detention as unlawful and a violation of due process.

According to the Minority, Mr. Ofosu Nkansah voluntarily complied with an invitation by the NIB as part of an ongoing probe into comments he made about alleged improper sales of government-sponsored scholarships. They argue that after cooperating with authorities and appearing when invited, he should not be held any further without formal charges or court orders.

In a formal statement presented in Parliament, the Minority argued that the detention raises serious concerns about the rule of law and constitutional rights. They noted that Ghana’s legal framework guarantees personal liberty and freedom from arbitrary arrest, stressing that citizens must always be protected by due process.

The caucus also faulted the Government for what they describe as a heavy-handed approach to handling allegations surrounding Mr. Ofosu Nkansah, whom they say has cooperated fully with investigators. They called on the Attorney-General and the Security Services to provide clarity on the legal basis for his continued detention or to release him immediately if no grounds exist.

Members of the Minority further reminded the Government of its obligation to uphold constitutionally protected rights, saying that holding an individual without formal charges or judicial process undermines public confidence in democratic institutions. They urged respect for civil liberties even during investigations into serious national issues.

The Minority’s demand adds to broader public discussion over Mr. Ofosu Nkansah’s case, which has drawn attention to how allegations of misconduct by public figures are addressed within Ghana’s legal and political systems.
