Israel and the United States Launch Major Military Strikes on Iran

Israel, together with the United States, has launched a coordinated military attack on the Islamic Republic of Iran in a major escalation of tensions in the Middle East. The strikes began early on Saturday, February 28, 2026, and represent a significant new chapter in the ongoing dispute over Iran’s nuclear and missile programs.

According to international reports, explosions were heard in several Iranian cities including Tehran, Qom, Isfahan, Kermanshah and Karaj, as the combined forces targeted military infrastructure and other strategic sites. The offensive, which some outlets describe as pre-emptive, followed months of planning and comes after diplomatic efforts to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions failed to reach a lasting agreement.

United States President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces had joined the assault, saying the aim was to eliminate what he described as “imminent threats” posed by Tehran’s regime and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He urged the Iranian people to “take over your government” once the operation ended.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also addressed the situation, explaining that the strike was intended to remove what his government sees as “an existential threat,” and he thanked President Trump for his support.

Iran has vowed a strong response to the attack, with state media and officials warning of retaliation and describing foreign assets in the Middle East as legitimate targets. Explosions and alerts have also been reported in Israel and neighbouring regions as part of the unfolding conflict.

The situation is rapidly evolving, and details on casualties, wider military movements and international responses are still emerging. Observers warn that this could mark a significant escalation in regional instability unless diplomatic channels are urgently reactivated.
