Kwesi Pratt Says JB Danquah’s Wife Left Him To Join Kwame Nkrumah’s Party

Senior journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight Newspaper, Kwesi Pratt Jr, has stated that Mabel Dove Danquah, the wife of Ghanaian statesman Joseph Boakye Danquah (J.B. Danquah), ended her marriage with him and later became closely associated with the Convention People’s Party (CPP) of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. His remarks were made during a discussion on the Nkrumah versus Danquah debate on Metro TV.

Pratt used this historical example to illustrate the widespread influence that Dr. Kwame Nkrumah and the CPP once held, pointing out that even individuals who had once been aligned with Danquah’s political circle were drawn to support Nkrumah’s movement. According to Pratt, this included Danquah’s own wife, who chose to part ways with him and align herself with Nkrumah’s political vision.

Historical records show that J.B. Danquah was a leading figure in the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and remained a key political opponent of Kwame Nkrumah before Ghana’s independence. Danquah’s first marriage was to Mabel Dove, a prominent journalist who later became an influential supporter of Nkrumah and the CPP and went on to make her own mark in the country’s political and media history.

Pratt’s comments formed part of broader reflections on Ghana’s political heritage and the dynamics between major independence era leaders, especially as debates over their legacies continue in public discourse.
