Counsellor Lutterodt Released After Brief Police Detention Over Controversial Remarks

Controversial Ghanaian relationship counsellor Cyril George Carstensen Lutterodt, widely known as Counsellor Lutterodt, has been released after being detained by the Ghana Police Service for questioning over comments that sparked public outrage.
Lutterodt was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigations Department following a viral video in which he allegedly made remarks that authorities considered capable of inciting unrest. According to police investigators, the comments were linked to issues surrounding the burial of late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
The remarks reportedly encouraged some youth to take action over the burial location of the late musician, a situation police believed could potentially lead to public disorder. Law enforcement officials therefore moved quickly to detain the counsellor for questioning while investigations into the matter began.
Following interrogation, the police granted Lutterodt bail. Authorities indicated that although he has been released from custody, he is expected to appear before court to face charges connected to the case. The charges include offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace under the Criminal Offences Act as well as allegations of inciting violence.
The police emphasised that the decision to investigate the counsellor was part of efforts to prevent any potential disturbances and maintain public order. Officials also urged the public to exercise caution when making statements about sensitive issues, particularly those that could provoke tension or unrest.
Counsellor Lutterodt has long been a controversial figure in Ghana’s media space, frequently appearing on radio and television programmes to discuss relationships, social issues, and cultural matters. His outspoken style has often generated heated debate, drawing both supporters and critics.
The latest incident has once again placed the counsellor at the centre of national conversation, especially on social media where reactions have been divided. While some people believe his comments crossed the line, others have defended his right to express his views.
With the matter now expected to proceed to court, the case will determine whether the remarks made by the counsellor violated laws governing public conduct and incitement.
