How Ghana Can Build Unity With Many Ethnic Groups, Kwesi Pratt Asks

Veteran Ghanaian journalist Kwesi Pratt has posed a major question about Ghana’s national unity given the country’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity. He asked how a country with about 75 ethnic groups and numerous languages can build and sustain a cohesive national identity.

Speaking on current affairs recently, Pratt focused on how Ghana’s cultural diversity can be both a strength and a challenge. He questioned whether the country’s many distinct ethnic identities help or hinder efforts to foster unity and shared purpose among citizens.

Ghana is known for its peaceful democratic tradition and has maintained relative political stability for decades. Despite this, the presence of large groups like the Akan, Mole-Dagbon, Ewe, Ga-Adangbe, and many others highlights the complexity of building a unified national vision.

Pratt’s comments are part of ongoing public conversations about how best to manage diversity in Ghana. Some commentators have previously suggested that a long-term national development plan agreed across political lines could strengthen cohesion and ensure continuity in policies beyond changes in government.

At the same time, experts emphasise the importance of acknowledging and celebrating Ghana’s cultural diversity while continuing to promote shared values that bind citizens together. Many believe that inclusive education, fair governance, and respect for all ethnic identities are key to building a united nation.
