Ghana Cedi Named Africa’s Best-Performing Currency In 2025

The Ghana cedi has emerged as the best-performing currency in Africa for the year 2025, according to new data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The report, which analysed more than 20 major African currencies, shows that the cedi appreciated by over 40 percent against the US dollar over the year, placing it ahead of all others on the continent.
Earlier assessments by some global financial firms had ranked the cedi slightly lower, but the IMF’s full-year review confirmed Ghana’s currency as the top performer in Africa in terms of US dollar gains. Analysts say the strong performance reflects policy measures by the Bank of Ghana and economic reforms supported under the IMF programme, as well as improved foreign exchange reserves that helped stabilize the local unit.
The cedi’s rise marks a notable turnaround for the currency after periods of volatility, underscoring renewed market confidence and stronger macroeconomic fundamentals in the West African economy.
