Family Of Gospel Icon Yaw Sarpong Visits Tourism Ministry

The family of the late gospel musician Yaw Sarpong has paid a formal visit to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts in Accra to officially inform the ministry of his passing and announce plans for his funeral. The delegation was led by the President of the Musicians Union of Ghana, Bessa Simons, and included other family members and representatives from the music industry.

During the meeting, Sector Minister Abla Dzifa Gomashie expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the beloved gospel figure, describing his death as a significant blow to the nation’s creative arts sector and to the Christian faith community. She shared heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government of Ghana, the ministry and the wider creative fraternity, offering support to the bereaved family during this difficult time.

The minister spoke about how Yaw Sarpong’s music had personally impacted her life, noting that some of his songs had brought comfort during times of grief and reflection. She emphasised the lasting spiritual influence the musician’s work had on listeners across the country and said his contributions to Ghanaian culture would not be forgotten.

Representatives from the ministry including senior directors for culture and finance were present to receive the family and join in expressing sympathy. The gathering underscored the strong legacy Yaw Sarpong leaves behind as one of Ghana’s most influential gospel artists, known for uplifting worshippers with his distinctive voice and spiritually rich compositions throughout his long career.

Yaw Sarpong passed away on January 20 2026 at the age of 66 after years of contributing to gospel music and mentoring young artists. His work with the Asomafo band helped shape the gospel music landscape in Ghana and earned him admiration from fans and fellow musicians alike.
