Dafeamekpor Says Ghana Bar Association Has Lost Its Credibility

Majority Chief Whip Rockson‑Nelson Dafeamekpor has strongly criticised the Ghana Bar Association (GBA), saying the professional body has “lost its credibility and crippled itself.” Dafeamekpor said the organisation, once respected as a voice of legal professionalism and national conscience, is no longer fulfilling that role.

Speaking publicly, he argued that the Ghana Bar Association has abandoned its tradition of independent and non-partisan engagement on national issues. He claimed the association has increasingly appeared aligned with the agenda of one political party, undermining its relevance and standing among lawyers and the public.

Dafeamekpor’s comments come amid ongoing controversy over the GBA’s position on constitutional and legal matters, including recent court filings by lawyers challenging aspects of the association’s role and status. He has previously supported efforts seeking a Supreme Court interpretation of the GBA’s constitutional role and whether its legal monopoly should be re-examined.

The Ghana Bar Association is a professional body for legal practitioners in Ghana, convening lawyers to promote ethical practice and contribute to rule-of-law issues. Critics like Dafeamekpor argue that in recent years the association has become less vocal on key national debates and selective in its engagement, weakening its historic influence.

The association has not publicly responded to these recent remarks, but the criticism reflects broader debate over its perceived impartiality and effectiveness. Supporters of the GBA say it remains a vital institution for legal professionals, while critics call for reforms to restore its standing and credibility.
