Billboard Faces Backlash After Labeling Rema A One-Hit Wonder

American music publication Billboard has come under sharp criticism online after resurfacing a ranking that described Nigerian Afrobeats star Rema as a “one-hit wonder.” The controversy has spread widely on social media, with fans, music lovers and industry observers pushing back against the label.

The original list, titled “The 25 Biggest One-Hit Wonders of the 21st Century,” included Rema at number six based on his success on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart with his 2022 global hit “Calm Down,” especially the remix featuring American singer **Selena Gomez.” Billboard noted that while the song peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and dominated the U.S. Afrobeats Songs chart, Rema has not yet returned to the Hot 100 with another entry.

Critics argue that this classification overlooks Rema’s broader achievements and his impact on music beyond the United States. Supporters pointed to his extensive catalogue of successful tracks such as Dumebi, Iron Man, Woman and others that have charted internationally and amassed millions of streams globally. They also highlighted his debut album Rave & Roses, which reached the top 10 of the UK Albums Chart, and his performances at major festivals and venues around the world.

Many fans took to social platforms to express disappointment, saying that the “one-hit wonder” tag diminishes Rema’s influence and contributions to Afrobeats as a genre that has grown well beyond its origins and now commands a global audience. Others noted that relying solely on U.S. chart performance as a measure of success fails to capture the international reach of artists like Rema whose music resonates across Africa, Europe, and beyond.

Some voices defended Billboard’s criteria, saying that the label was based strictly on U.S. chart statistics and not intended to undermine the artist’s wider accomplishments. They argued that in global music discussions, different markets and metrics should be considered.

The debate has reignited conversations about how global talent is assessed in mainstream rankings, especially for artists from genres like Afrobeats that have a strong international presence but may not always reflect power on U.S. charts alone.
