Bawumia Urges Political Restraint And Calls For Unity In Ghana’s Democracy

Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has made a strong appeal for political calm and national unity, warning that Ghana’s democratic progress must not be reduced to acts of vengeance or political score-settling. His comments were delivered at an Islamic Thanksgiving and Prayer session in Accra, where he emphasised the need for inclusive governance and political maturity.

Dr Bawumia’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in the country’s political landscape, including concerns about intimidation and arrests of political figures. He urged the current government led by the John Dramani Mahama administration to avoid actions that might inflame tensions or divide citizens, instead calling for a leadership approach that reassures all Ghanaians, regardless of their political affiliations.

“Our democracy must never be reduced to vengeance,” Bawumia said, adding that Ghana is facing significant economic and social pressures and now requires healing, constructive engagement, and respectful dialogue among political actors. He stressed that focusing on national priorities would better serve the population than pursuing political reprisals or settling old scores.

The NPP flagbearer also highlighted the importance of patience, listening, and cooperation in addressing the country’s challenges, and urged political leaders and citizens alike to place national interest above partisan interests.
