Akufo-Addo Says Bawumia’s Re-Election As NPP Flagbearer Shows Strong Party Support

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has spoken on the recent re-election of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the 2028 general elections, saying the outcome reflects strong confidence in the party’s choice and direction. In remarks shared on Friday, President Akufo-Addo congratulated Dr Bawumia and called on all party members to unite behind the flagbearer to ensure a successful campaign and victory in the next polls.

Addressing supporters and political commentators, Akufo-Addo said that the NPP’s internal democratic process had produced a clear result that should be embraced by all members. He emphasised that Dr Bawumia’s re-election signals a shared belief in his leadership qualities, vision and capacity to lead the nation should the party win back government in 2028. The President noted that the party’s unity and collective effort will be crucial as it prepares for the national campaign.

President Akufo-Addo also highlighted the importance of internal cohesion within the NPP, saying that a united party is better positioned to connect with voters across regions and demographic groups. He urged delegates and supporters who backed other aspirants in the primary to now focus on helping Dr Bawumia build momentum among the broader electorate.

Reflecting on the outcome, Akufo-Addo said that Ghanaians are looking for leadership that can address the country’s economic and social challenges. He expressed confidence that Dr Bawumia, backed by a united NPP, can present credible alternatives to the current government’s policies and win public trust. The President’s comments came shortly after a high-spirited party event where delegates from across the country cast their votes and affirmed Dr Bawumia’s candidacy.

Political analysts said Akufo-Addo’s public endorsement helps consolidate party morale, especially since the NPP will be contesting against a strong opposition in 2028. They noted that early displays of unity and leadership support can shape public perception and lay groundwork for campaign strategy in the months ahead.
